FAQs about Swimrun
EX Swimrun organizes swimrun races in and around Stockholm, Sweden. Swimrun combines open-water swimming and trail running in the same race, with distances suitable for both beginners and experienced participants. Below you’ll find answers to common questions about the events, equipment, and how to prepare for your first race.
What is Swimrun?
Swimrun is a Swedish endurance sport where participants alternate between open-water swimming and trail running in the same race. The sport often takes place in archipelagos, lakes, and forested areas.
Where are EX Swimrun races held?
We organize races in and around Stockholm, including Edsviken, Runmarö, and the new Marina National Park in the Stockholm archipelago.
Is Swimrun suitable for beginners?
Yes. EX Swimrun offers shorter distances and beginner-friendly races such as EX FIVE and EX SHORT, designed so that participants of all levels can take part.
Do you have to compete in pairs, or can you race alone?
Most Swimrun races are run in pairs, but some distances also allow individual participants. It’s a perfect way to take part on your own terms.
What equipment is needed for Swimrun?
Standard equipment includes a wetsuit, paddles, pull buoy (or “domle”), swimming goggles, and shoes suitable for both swimming and trail running.
How long is a typical Swimrun race?
Distances range from about 5 km (EX FIVE) up to 25 km or longer (EX LONG). The proportion of swimming compared to the total distance is usually 10–25%, and at EX Swimrun we aim for around 20% swimming on longer distances in SWIFA.
How should I prepare for my first Swimrun race?
Train in both open-water swimming and trail running. Ideally, combine swimming and running in the same training session to get your body used to the transitions. Focus extra on transitions, as you can save a lot of time mastering them.
Are there age limits for participation?
Generally, participants must be 16 years or older to race independently. In some beginner distances, children and younger participants can participate when accompanied by an adult.
How do I register for an EX Swimrun race?
Registration is done via the official EX Swimrun website at www.exswimrun.se, under the “Registration” section, where all races are listed.
Is it necessary to be a strong swimmer?
Basic swimming skills are required, but shorter beginner distances are adapted for participants with varying swimming ability. Swimming can often be done close to shore, allowing you to exit the water if needed.
Are times recorded and results published?
Yes. All races have official timing, and results are published online after each race. Under “Results,” you can find past EX Swimrun race results.
Is EX Swimrun environmentally friendly?
Yes. The events strive to minimize environmental impact and follow local sustainability and conservation regulations. Swimrun is based on a nature experience, and all activities are conducted with care for sensitive environments.
Are there food and drink stations along the course?
Yes. Most races provide hydration stations and simple energy options along the course. It’s common in Swimrun to carry your own gels and fluids as well.
Can I participate with my dog?
Yes. In some races, dogs are allowed in CaniSwimrun events. EX Swimrun was among the first to try this concept.
How long does it take to complete a Swimrun race?
Time varies depending on distance and experience. Try-out races may take 30–45 minutes, beginner distances 1–2 hours, and longer races 4–6 hours or more.
Are there Swimrun training groups in Stockholm?
Yes. EX Swimrun, together with Swimruncupen and WolffWear, organizes training sessions, practice races, and beginner groups.
Is Swimrun dangerous?
The sport is safe when participants follow the rules, use proper equipment, and swim in groups or pairs.
How do I choose the right wetsuit for Swimrun?
Choose a wetsuit that is flexible for both running and swimming, ideally with good buoyancy and ventilated zones for comfort. Swimrun wetsuits often have a front zipper, making it easier to “cab down” (open the suit during running segments).
Are there tips to improve my Swimrun performance?
Train consistently in both swimming and running, test your equipment in race-like conditions beforehand, and practice the transitions between swimming and running.
